"Yoga" is a Sanskrit term that can be translated as "to unite," and refers to the unification of the body, mind, and spirit through the multi-faceted, ancient Indian practice of Yoga. Traditionally, Classical Yoga was based on an 8-limb system codified by an Indian sage named Patanjali (c. 200 BCE), which integrates balance in behavior, life-style development, yoga postures, control of prana, control of the senses, concentration, meditation, and realization.*

In America today, we typically observe yoga as a physical practice of yoga postures, or asanas, and sometimes meditation and breathing alignment, or pranayama. Americanized yoga has developed an enormous range of flavors, from an array of studio settings (hot yoga, vinyasa) to gymnasiums (power yoga, pilate-yoga, weight training yoga) to spiritual settings (ashram retreats, meditation sits, traditional practices). Frequently Buddhist and other traditional influences are adopted into practice, such as mindfulness meditation. Practitioners often journey through many approaches when their personal evolution calls for something more or different than their current practice, or as they explore what approach fits for them.

BalancedHealing Yoga approaches teaching with the belief that each individual is naturally drawn to the yoga practice that suits his or her needs for the given time. Classes are rooted in Classical Hatha Yoga in a manner than is easily accessible to the everyday individual, and are based upon the underlying themes of:
  • Re-connection to the body
  • Alignment of body & breath
  • Appreciation of the present moment
  • Gentility & acceptance of the self as it is today
  • Empowerment of the inner being for whom our bodies provide shelter

Private sessions are tailored to the needs and interests of the individual, and can include focuses in restoration, stress-reduction, strength-building, self esteem enhancement, injury modification, modifications for limited mobility, and weight release.
